Many internet phone calls to your other sites or to home-workers are really high quality.  However, now and again the internet phone calls cannot be established or are pretty awful.  Why?

Let’s start with voice-over-IP.  In a closely controlled data network the IT manager will ensure he has Layer 3 switches as a minimum standard with the Quality of Service (QOS) turned on.  This feature prioritises voice packet delivery and delays other packets momentarily to achieve real time transmission from source to destination enabling instantaneous speech.  Once outside this Local-Area-Network, although exactly the same, have far more traffic and distance to contend with when they become internet phone calls.  Frequently the v-packets will be delayed by seconds and meaningful conversations are impossible.

Now that SIP has been introduced it is more probable that your internet phone calls will be more robust as the highways are designated for telephony routing rather than for general use.
