least cost routing
After BT’s monopoly was ended in the early 1980s least cost routing providers emerged. Primarily it was Mercury Communications that lead this charge with their 2100 and 2200 least cost routing services (direct & indirect).
Telecoms manufacturers then built least cost routing tables into their products so that dependant on the STD code dialled, the PABX would prefix the number with access digits which would route the call to the least cost routing provider’s network.
Today least cost routing is normally implemented in the local exchange. When you select your least cost routing provider they will instruct BT that calls made from your Calling Line Identity are to be passed to them for onwards transmission and delivery.
This means there is little or no disruption to you when moving from one least cost routing service to another when you’ve arranged a better package of tariffs.
