The term “Phone Data Cabling” applies to systems for connecting telephony and/or data terminals to their central processing devices. Phone cabling was implemented using CW1308 cable terminating on a standard “BT Socket”. Data Cabling had many & varied proprietary implemetations and through standardisation have reduced in number.
The Phone Data Cabling methods “converged” so that it is not necessary, when moving a person, to require both data-communications and telephone engineers to be present.
Nowadays offices are more than likely to have a Phone Data Cabling system more commonly referred to as structured cabling (CAT5, CAT5e or even CAT6) where all possibilities of desks / work stations have been planned and phone/data outlets provided. The major benefit with this type of Phone Data Cabling is that all potential phone ports can have been pre-programmed so the IT manager can simply reposition a user’s PC & phone without needing to call in two specialists.
