An RJ11 cable should conform to the international RJ11 cabling specification of 6 position, 4 conductors (6P4C).  RJ11 cable is employed in many situations in data communications and telephony.  You will see RJ11 Cable utilised in your phone on the office desk or in the home. 

In an RJ11 cable one pair of wires connect “Tip & Ring” in your house phone, while in the office two will be used for speech while another pair will provide signalling for keyphone indications.

Some RJ11 cable will also carry power.  Usually pins 2 and 5 (yellow – black) may carry low voltage DC or AC power.  A telephone signal would normally provide sufficient current for most telephone terminals (though T & P).
