A telephone modem has been the way remote support has been offered to many customers on their telephone systems over the years.  Nowadays we’re seeing the majority of such supporting services being implemented over the web with an indirect IP connection (the IP-address of the maintainer is entered in the permitted list of the company’s firewall for security). 

Other uses that the telephone modem is put to are for PDQ’s, Faxes and the like.  The signalling is an in-band carrier frequency utilising FSK modulation. (Frequency Shift Keying).
