voip bandwidth
The voip bandwidth that you use is critical in determining whether you need a dedicated broadband circuit or if your existing service is sufficient for your needs.
Each voip call that you make takes approximately 60Kb of voip bandwidth. A basic internet connection at home may have a 2Mb download speed, but only 256Kb upload. As such it is only recommended that you have one or two simultaneous voip calls over that line. Web browsing will be taking place at the same time so it’s more than possible that when you come to initiate a VoIP conversation, that there is insufficient voip bandwidth and you get “no channel available” presented to you.
Telephone Systems Direct recommends to voip users that have offices or home-workers linked that if there is the possibility that two-or-more voip-calls will occur simultaneously, that an additional broadband-pipe is installed specifically for voip traffic.
