VoIP IP telephony is the technology allowing intelligible speech to be transmitted across a network.  This could be an office LAN, a nationwide WAN, or even the Global Internet.

The VoIP IP telephony is possible as a result of the ability to digitise audible sounds and then reconstitute them after transmission. These digital signals are formed into “voice-packets”. Each packet contains a number of bytes of data irrespective of whether it’s come from a computer or from a telephone.  In order for clear conversation all the v-packets have to be prioritised over d-packets so they can arrive at their destination in real time.  They can travel by different routes so have a sequence tag to identify them.  When they have arrived they are put into the correct sequencing before being converted back into sound for you to hear.

All that is referred to as VoIP Quality of Service (or QOS for short).
