what is voip
What is voip? Put simply it is speech transmitted over an internet connection e.g. SKYPE.
What is VoIP in more detail? It is the acronym for VOICE-OVER-INTERNET-PROTOCOL.
Your words spoken into the mouth piece of your phone handset or microphone connected to a PC or laptop are converted into computer bits (ones and noughts). There will be a long string of these so they are grouped into bytes and then packets. Essentially the packet is an envelope containing part of the conversation. Each one has the address where it is being sent to and a sequence number. This is so that when they arrive at the destination they can be reconstituted in the right order. They may have travelled down different paths, dependant on traffic congestion; just like our roads!
Obviously to hear what was original in real time the envelopes have to be prioritised over non-important parcels of data. This is a feature called QOS of Routers & Switches. Fortunately the world wide web has this ability so voip is possible.
Hope that has explained “what is voip”. In business the two people using voip might be in the same building but utilising their IP network instead for the WWW.
