wireless convergence

What is wireless convergence?  Well it’s a follow on from wireless and fixed line convergence.  Nowadays voice over IP – VoIP is readily available through Wi-Fi Hotspots at major city termini, hotels, restaurant chains, coffee shops.  With Broadband connectivity through your cell phone and being able to listen to your messages on the move through a bluetooth connected headset the ideas of the mid 20th Century are becoming a reality.

Now we have MVNOs (mobile Virtual Network Operators), who provide global reach to multi-national organisations ensuring their workers never have a moment without being contactable (What has the world come to!).  The other technologies making wireless convergence possible are GSM, GPRS, CDMA, EDGE and UMTS.

Over the next few years we expect an explosion in new products and services through wireless convergence.  But it does depend on PTOs investing in infrastructure..  How long did it take the UK to catch up with Europe on non-dial up internet access?  We may see WiMAX become more popular as is 3G.  Soon (who knows) Mobile-FI will overtake the competitors.
